What are TikTok groups?
TikTok groups allow users to create a private space to connect and interact with a select group of friends or other users. Groups enable users to share content, chat, and collaborate directly with each other in a more private setting than the main TikTok feed (source: https://www.creativebloq.com/features/tiktok-trends).
The purpose of TikTok groups is to provide a space for small communities of users with shared interests to come together. For example, creators can use groups to connect more intimately with their fans. Groups also allow friends to share videos and jokes privately. Overall, groups offer a more exclusive social experience than the open TikTok platform (source: https://tecnobits.com/en/how-to-make-groups-on-tiktok/).
How to create a TikTok group
Creating a group on TikTok allows users to share videos and chat with a select group of people. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to create a TikTok group:
1. Open the TikTok app and tap on the “Me” tab at the bottom.
2. Tap on the 3-line menu icon in the top right corner and select “Groups” from the menu.
3. Tap on the “+” icon in the top right to create a new group.
4. Give your group a name and handle. The handle needs to be unique and will be part of the group’s URL.
5. Choose the privacy settings for your group – public, private or approval only to join.
6. Tap “Create” and your new TikTok group is ready. You can now add members to your group.
7. To add members, tap the “+” icon and select a friend to add. You can also share a link to your group profile so others can request to join.

Group name and handle
Choosing a good name and handle for your TikTok group is an important first step. The name helps establish the group’s identity and purpose, while the handle makes it easy to find and identify the group.
When brainstorming name ideas, be creative and aim for something unique that represents the group. You could name it after an inside joke amongst members, combine first name initials, use a random word generator, or base it off shared interests or values. Just make sure it’s short, catchy and appropriate (see “Group Names”).
The handle functions like a username, allowing people to find and follow your group. It should be closely tied to the name and convey similar themes or ideas. Include important keywords if you want the group to be discoverable. You’re limited to 15 characters, so keep it concise.
Before finalizing the name and handle, search TikTok to ensure no identical or confusingly similar groups already exist. You want something unique that represents your squad. But most importantly, choose something everyone feels reflects them and will be proud to rep.
Setting group privacy
When creating a TikTok group, you have the option to make it public or private. Public groups are open and anyone on TikTok can join them. Private groups require approval from a group admin for someone to join.
To make a TikTok group public or private:
- Tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner of the group page.
- Select “Edit group info.”
- Toggle the “Private” switch off for a public group or on for a private group.
With a public group, anyone on TikTok can view the content, join the group, and interact with posts. Private groups offer more control and privacy. Group admins can screen who joins and keeps the content limited to approved members only (source).
The privacy setting can be changed at any time. Admins may want to start with a private group and open it up later once the purpose, rules, and intended audience are established.
Adding group members
Once you have created a new group on TikTok, the next step is to add members. To add members to your TikTok group, you can invite friends or followers that you are connected with on the app. When setting up the group, TikTok gives you the option to make it open to the public or invite-only. With an invite-only group, you will need to manually invite each member.
To invite friends or followers to your new TikTok group, open the group page and tap the “Invite” button. This will bring up your connections list. You can then select which friends or followers you want to invite and send them a request to join the group.
TikTok does not currently have a direct way to invite people who are not already your connections. However, you can share a link to the private group and ask people to request to join. As the admin, you will then have to manually approve their request before they can become members.
Adding members is an important part of creating a TikTok group. Inviting friends and followers helps get your group started and builds an engaged community. With an invite-only group, carefully curating the members ensures only those you want can join and participate.
Group admin privileges
The group admin has special powers and responsibilities within a TikTok group. According to How to Add Admin in TikTok Group, the main privileges of being a TikTok group admin include:
– Adding and removing members from the group
– Editing the group’s name, handle, and privacy settings
– Deleting posts and comments within the group
– Promoting other members to admin status
– Ultimately being in charge of the group and its content
As the founder of the group, the first admin gains these privileges automatically. Further admins can be added from existing group members. It’s important for the admin to manage the group responsibly and foster a positive community.
Posting in the group
Once you’ve created a TikTok group, you can start posting videos, images, and text to the group feed. Any member of the group can post content that will be visible to all members in the group chat.
To make a post in your TikTok group:
- Open the TikTok app and go to your profile
- Tap the “Groups” tab at the bottom
- Select your group from the list
- Tap the + icon in the bottom toolbar
- You can now record a new video, upload a video from your camera roll, take a photo, or type text
- Add any text, effects, stickers, etc. you want
- When you’re done, tap “Post” to share it to the group feed
The post will now appear in the group for all members to view, like, and comment on. Make sure to post engaging videos, images, polls, and text that will spark conversation within your TikTok group.
You can also cross-post videos you’ve already shared to your personal TikTok feed. Tap the “Share” icon on any video and select your group to re-share it.
Commenting in the group
Once you are a member of a TikTok group, you can engage with posts by commenting on them. Commenting is a great way to interact with other group members and build a sense of community.
To leave a comment on a post in the group, simply tap on the comment icon below the video and type your comment. You can leave emoji reactions and reply to other people’s comments as well.
Group admins have the ability to turn commenting on or off for the group. If commenting is turned on, all members can comment freely. If it is turned off, no one will be able to comment.
You can filter certain words from comments in your group’s posts by enabling the “Filter Comments” setting. This will automatically filter out comments containing prohibited words.
Engaging by commenting on group members’ posts is a fun way to connect. Just remember to keep comments positive and constructive!
Leaving a Group
If a member wants to leave a TikTok group they are in, it’s a simple process. On the group’s page, tap the “Members” tab at the bottom. This will bring up the list of members. Find your name on the list and tap “Leave group” next to it. You will be prompted to confirm you want to leave the group.
Alternatively, you can go to your profile, tap the 3-line menu icon in the top-right corner, choose “Groups”, select the group you want to leave, tap the “Members” tab at the bottom, find your name on the list, and tap “Leave group.”
Once you leave a TikTok group, you will no longer see the group on your account or have access to view its content. The group’s admin cannot add you back without your permission. Leaving a group does not delete your past posts or comments made in the group prior to exiting.
If you change your mind later, you can ask the admin to send you another invite link to rejoin the group. This gives members full control over which groups they belong to at any given time on TikTok.

Deleting a group
If you are the admin of a TikTok group, you have the ability to delete the group entirely. This removes the group from existence and is permanent. Here’s how to delete a TikTok group as the admin:
1. Open the group chat and tap the group name at the top of the screen.
2. Tap “Delete group” at the bottom of the screen.
3. Tap “Delete” again to confirm you want to delete the group.
Once you delete the group, all members will be removed and they will no longer be able to access any part of the group chat. The group and all associated content will be permanently erased. There is no way to recover a deleted group chat on TikTok (1).
Deleting a group chat you created removes it entirely for all members. Regular members cannot delete a group, only the admin has this ability. So if you want to fully remove a group chat on TikTok, the admin must delete it.
